Shanty
Days 2008 - Celebration of the Lake
August
8 - 10
Introduction
ADMISSION
Access to anything located on the main grounds requires a Shanty
Days "Button." Admission for all three days is $7 at the
gate (kids 11 and under, FREE). Presale buttons are $5 and are available
prior to the event at the Algoma Visitors Center, and local financial
institutions.
ABOUT
THE FESTIVAL
The community of Algoma will celebrate their Lake Michigan heritage
with the annual "Shanty Days Celebration of the Lake".
This year's event marks our 20th year and we expect to draw thousands
of visitors to the lake shore community.
Algoma
takes great pride in this festival's focus of Family Fun. We provide
something for every taste and age group. The festival grounds, overlooking
the Algoma harbor, feature a variety of entertainment, lots of things
to see, and a host of fun activities for kids and teens.
Although
this festival officially begins on Friday afternoon on the main
grounds, pre-events take place in Algoma, including the four-day
Shanty Days Fishing tournament (Thursday-Sunday); the Friends of
the Library annual book sale (Friday, beginning at 8 a.m.); and
the Mayor's honoree luncheon (Friday at noon).
On
Saturday the crowds bring chairs and enjoy one of Wisconsin's largest
community parades. Another popular place to visit on Saturday and
Sunday is the Art Show and Street Fair. This four-block area features
more than 150 vendors and provides an opportunity to visit with
craftsmen and women, get decorating and hobby ideas.
All
festivities continue on Sunday with the bonus of the fireworks spectacular
finale (at dusk) to cap-off this three-day event.
Other
events include the annual 5K Walk/Run (Saturday morning), a special
area filled with children's activities (Friday-Sunday), and look
for other activities around the main grounds and throughout the
city.
Food
is always a popular attraction at Shanty Days. The variety of food
available includes burgers, hot dogs, bratwurst, fish plates and
sandwiches, authentic chicken booyah, chili, a variety of sausages,
desserts, funnel cakes, snow cones, cotton candy, popcorn, ice cream,
bottled water, lemonade shakeup, roasted nuts, AND MUCH, MUCH MORE!
Plan
to attend the Ecumenical worship service Sunday morning on the beach.
This is also a perfect opportunity to experience one of Algoma's
delightful sunrises. Shanty Days "Celebration of the Lake"
is sponsored by the Algoma Area Chamber of Commerce.
DRINKING
ID
Shanty Days is concerned about underage drinking. Since
this is a family festival, we are asking everyone who is 21-25 years
old to stop at the main gate with identification and receive a plastic
bracelet or hand stamp.
