Visitor
Information Center
Located on Hwy 42 (Lake Street) and overlooking Lake Michigan, the
Algoma Visitor Center is built on a public park. This award winning
structure was built by the Chamber with all volunteer labor. Money
to pay for materials was raised from donations from private individuals,
businesses, industries and organizations. Upon completion, the Chamber
gave the building to the city of Algoma, though the Chamber continues
to maintain the VIC. Not a dime of tax money has been used for the
project and the Visitor Center is staffed year round by a group
of about 40 volunteers--many senior citizens from Algoma. They work
four-hour shifts and give information to visitors on attractions,
accommodations, fishing, things to see and do, and how to get there.
Open daily from May through October from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Off season,
the VIC is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Stop in for brochures
from individual businesses, menus from area restaurants, information
for new residents and a great view from the wrap around deck. 920-487-2041
von
Stiehl Winery
Wisconsin's
oldest winery features tours and tasting from their Bohemian tasting
salon. von Stiehl is housed in a 1850's era building that was originally
the Ahnapee Brewery. Used as everything from storage to a washing
machine factory in the interim, the structure was perfect for Dr.
Stiehl's hobby, wine making, when it outgrew his basement. By the
time the current owners, Bill & Sandy Schmiling bought the winery,
the reputation for excellent wine and unique bottling was already
formed. Bill has expanded the product line greatly to include about
two dozen wines featuring apples, cherries, plum, raspberry, blueberry
as well as dessert wines and non-alcoholic offerings. von Stiehl
still "wraps" some bottles in their distinctive white casts, a brainstorm
of Dr. Stiehl who wanted to protect his newly made wines from heat
and light while it aged. Wrapping the bottles in white casts, much
like he would wrap a broken limb in his medical practice, gave von
Stiehl wines a very unique look. von Stiehl Winery 115 Navarino
